Stephen Newton: Drawings 1977-2017
“The drawings of Stephen Newton collected in this catalogue are but a small selection from copious sketchpads and notebooks, created over a period of forty years in an almost obsessive ritual. Those familiar with Newton’s painting process will know his method of working surfaces with heavy impasto paint, an extended technique that requires months to conclude. So much co, that Newton often has a number of paintings ‘in production’ at any one time. To record the ideas and images that occur to him constantly he took to drawing onto large sketchpads (with ink, pencil and oil crayon) almost as a ‘psychic’ diary - arcane notes which can eventually synthesise into paintings.” Mike von Joel
